A good farewell message names one real thing about the person and wishes them well. You do not need more than two or three sentences. Pick a line below, then make it yours with a name or a shared memory.
Short and heartfelt
- Working with you made even the busy weeks feel lighter. Thank you for everything.
- You made this place better. Wherever you go next is lucky to have you.
- Thank you for the advice, the patience, and the laughs. You are already missed.
- It is hard to picture the office without you. Keep in touch!
Funny goodbyes
- Who am I supposed to share lunch breaks with now?
- Congratulations on escaping! Send us a postcard from the other side.
- You cannot leave. Who will fix the printer now?
- Your mug stays here. It is part of the team now.
For your boss
- Thank you for backing us in every meeting and pushing us to grow. It has been a privilege.
- You taught me more in one year than any course ever did. Thank you for leading by example.
- The best managers are the ones you keep learning from long after they leave. That is you.
- Thank you for trusting me with work I did not think I was ready for.
For a teacher
- Thank you for making every lesson feel like it mattered. Your lessons stay with your students.
- You saw potential in us before we saw it ourselves. Enjoy your next chapter!
- A whole classroom of memories says thank you today.
Short farewell messages
- Good luck and keep in touch!
- Thank you for everything. All the best.
- It was a pleasure working with you.
- Wishing you the best in the new role.
How to write a farewell message
- Mention with their name. "Dear Sam" or just "Sam," feels warmer.
- Say one specific thing. A project you did together, a habit you miss, or something they taught you.
- Wish them well. Keep it about their next step, not about how hard it is for you.
- Keep the door open. Add how to stay in touch if you mean it.
- Sign with your name. In a shared card, people want to know who wrote what.
If the person is leaving on bad terms or the reason is private, keep it simple: thank them for their work and wish them well. That is always enough.
Leaving card or farewell email?
A card works best when the team signs it together and hands it over on the last day. An email works best when you are the one leaving and want to thank everyone at once. If you are writing your own farewell email, send it on your last day, keep it short, and add a personal contact only if you are happy to share it.
